Study objectives

Urbanisation and climate change are current phenomena which provide the background for the master programme in future urban sustainability. The impacts of urbanisation are reflected in the growing need for multidisciplinary approaches in planning and management processes. This programme invites both Finnish and international applicants, with suitable backgrounds, to work together with practical challenges from working life. The aim of the programme is to offer a wider professional perspective to students possessing relevant practical experience. The programme is arranged by combining virtual and contact learning, which includes intensive weeks and separate contact days, over the period of one academic year. The thesis work serves as an opportunity to adapt current academic research to practical needs and situations in a sustainable city or an organisation.

The aim of the study is to adapt a multidisciplinary knowledge base tourban environments. New kinds of skills and competencies are needed in working life of the future. Students are expected to know, manage and develop an interdisciplinary approach to urban development and management tasks.

Study contents

The main issues in professional studies are communicative development and management practises in urban environment, climate change and its environmental impacts, sustainable cities and use of GIS. Students can also choose complementary studies from other LUAS Master programmes or FUAS Master programmes (in Laurea UAS and HAMK UAS). Research subjects cover urban and environmental issues in large scale. Research is working life orientated and aims to adapt results of environmental research to practical situations in development and management. The methods used are chosen according to the aim in question.

Structure of studies

The curriculum is workplace orientated and based on the students' individual study plans.

60 ECTS:

• Professional studies 4 x 5 ECTS = 20 ECTS
• Master's thesis 30 ECTS
• Elective studies 2 x 5 ECTS = 10 ECTS

The education includes the following professional areas: 1. Urban and interactive development, 2. Climate change and its environmental impacts, 3. Sustainable and smart cities and, 4. GIS as a tool. The education is carried out through intensive periods and with the help of virtual meetings and eLearning platforms. The Programme offers the alternatives of studying either full-time or part-time, integrated with otherwise normal working life.

The field of specialisation is gained through the choice of the Master´s thesis topic.

More about the language of instruction *www

The language of instruction and completion in all major courses of the programme is English.


Thesis project can deal with challenging urban and environmental issues considering the climate change mitigation and adaptation viewpoints. It can introduce national and/or international cases and practices. Thesis can also concentrate on the development of an organisation or it can be integrated with an externally funded project in LAMK. Main emphasis is the working life relevance of the thesis project. Thesis project requires independent working, use of suitable methods to provide knowledge base of the thesis, good competencies to use references critically and abilities to make conclusions of behalf of the results.
LAMK Master School is cooperation group of all the Master programmes from faculties of business, design, social and health care and technology. Part of the Master education in technology is arranged together with all the programmes. The elective studies are chosen from this common platform. These studies consist of multidisciplinary lectures, projects and seminars.

Qualification *www

The student can plan, manage and evaluate individually a challenging developing project dealing with urban environmental issues. The student is able to use interactive methods in project management.


International dimension is essential part of the education. Visiting lecturers from partner universities participate the courses and international examples and practices are used in education. International student exchange is available to Master students also, and several students have used it already.

Co-operation with other parties

The programme works in cooperation with public and private stakeholders, such as enterprises and organisations in Finland. Part of the partner organisations are international enterprises. Cooperation takes place also with the FUAS universities of applied sciences (Laurea, HAMK), as well as with other higher education institutes.

Research focus

The programme has got influence from research projects in environmental technology, such as the development of interdisciplinary environmental Master education combining scientific, management and planning viewpoints. Also environmental projects dealing with green areas and stormwater, future learning environments, energy and material efficiency, circular economy and cooperation with African countries and their higher education institutes have all had an influence on the programmes specifications.

The studies provide wider working opportunities in the public sector and private enterprises depending on the combination of the student´s Bachelor degree, working experience and Master´s thesis. Master´s studies provide opportunities for an environmentally orientated career.

Postgraduate study opportunities are available on national or international level, but students are urged to find out the special requirements applying to Master students who have graduated from universities of applied sciences.
