Study objectives

The programme places special emphasis on the prevention of exclusion, the recognition of risk conditions in time, and issues related to inclusion and early support.

The core competence produced by this programme can be divided into three areas: Expertise in social services, research-based development competence, and leadership competence.

On successful completion of this programme, a student will be able to
- work independently in demanding expert tasks and international cooperation networks in the social sector
- critically assess the starting points of research and development activity and understand the role of ethics in the activities
- manage competencies and the development of professional practices and services in the social sector in complex and unpredictable operating environments.

Study contents

The programme is comprised of advanced professional studies (45 ECTS credits), with contents including challenges in the welfare of children and young people, actions to ensure the welfare of children and young people, management studies, research and development studies. The thesis covers 30 ECTS credits. In addition, the programme includes 15 ECTS credits' worth of elective studies.

The programme is carried out in Finnish, one course is in English


The thesis will be carried out as a research-based development project, which can be the student's own work place project or a research and development project of Lahti University of Applied Sciences, a partner institution or other regional organisation. Students are expected to apply research methods and development methodology in their thesis projects.

Qualification *www

The programme qualifies graduates for public positions and services requiring a Master's degree. In addition, the qualifications of social work personnel are also determined by the Act on Qualification Requirements for Social Welfare Professionals.


The programme includes one English-language course as well as international lectures and workshops arranged as part of other courses. Students have the opportunity to have an exchange period abroad through the Erasmus programme.
