Study objectives

As a physiotherapist, you will independently plan, implement, assess and develop your work by taking into consideration the ethical and legal aspects as well as the requirements concerning effectiveness, efficacy and economic efficiency.

The physiotherapist programme enables you to learn to analyse, examine and support individuals’ ability to function and mobility in different ages and with different backgrounds, as well as to prevent and rehabilitate various illnesses and injuries. Your professional core competence consists of physiotherapy examination and assessment, guidance and therapy practices as well as expert competence.

As a physiotherapist, your work is customer-centred and evidence-based. You will work together with specialists in the treatment and rehabilitation of the customer and act as an expert in multidisciplinary teams. You will identify the prerequisites for health, mobility and ability to function and know how to assess a customer’s health, mobility, ability to function and limitations in the customer’s operating environment. You will master the use of physiotherapy methods, including guidance and counselling promoting health and the ability to function, therapeutic exercises, manual and physical therapy, and assistive equipment services. As a physiotherapist, you will know how to analyse, combine and assess information critically and to develop yourself, your work and your profession.

Study contents

The physiotherapist programme is workplace-oriented and emphasises smart solutions for health-focused physical activity. As a physiotherapist, you will have opportunities to develop future solutions for promoting the well-being and rehabilitation of the population. You will study in real-life customer situations and workplace projects, in which your partners include teachers and working life professionals. As a student, you can also develop an entrepreneurial approach to work and competence by joining a student cooperative.

The shared programme content in the Lahti University of Applied Sciences includes language studies, which aim to deepen the language skills specific to the profession. Other shared learning content include Professional Development, Foresight, and Research and Development Competence. The shared content in social and health care focuses on the customer in changing operating environments, health promotion, as well as leadership and quality.

Key contents of core competence in the physiotherapist programme include human anatomy and physiology, analysis and support of a person’s functional ability and mobility, prevention and treatment of a variety of illnesses and injuries through physiotherapy, manual therapy methods, basics of physical exercise and therapeutic exercise, well-being technologies, assistive equipment services, living environment design, motor learning and guidance competence, health promotion, and competence in physical activity for health.

The complementary competence portion of the programmes specifies and deepens the student’s professional competence. These studies highlight the central, current or future challenges in the sector as well as has a multidisciplinary aspect, which are learned in cooperation with workplaces through project work.

Structure of studies

The scope of the programme is 210 credits. The physiotherapy programme consists of the shared core competence at the Lahti University of Applied Sciences (25 ECTS), professional core competence (155 ECTS) as well as complementary competence (30 ECTS).
Professional core competence (155 ECTS) includes shared studies in social and health care (20 ECTS ), professional physiotherapist programme studies (120 ECTS of which practice accounts for 45 ECTS) and a thesis (15 ECTS). The curriculum is made up of modules worth 10–15 ECTS each, and each module is divided into courses, which are worth 5–10 ECTS each. The studies include a minimum of 15 ECTS of studies in English.

The degree programme language is Finnish. Some of the courses will be delivered in English, and some English-language learning materials will also be used.


The UAS Bachelor's degree includes a thesis project which carries 15 ECTS. The thesis will expand and deepen your professional competence and provide diverse skills to work in sector development tasks. The thesis will improve your information gathering and problem-solving skills as well as sense-making. It also enables genuine interaction with working life, since the thesis is primarily drawn up as a working life assignment. The thesis can be completed individually or as pair or group work and it includes a written report.

Qualification *www

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will earn the degree of a Bachelor of Health Care and be qualified to work as a physiotherapist, which is a registered health care professional. Only a physiotherapist with a degree may use the degree title of and work as a physiotherapist. The physiotherapist profession is overseen by VALVIRA, the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health, and the Regional State Administrative Agency AVI (entrepreneurs). Your work will be guided by laws and decrees, values, professional ethics and the workplace practices.

You will be able to complete part of your studies at our partner institutions around the world and complete practice periods in other countries. Our language course offering is designed to help you develop extensive and diverse language skills. English-language courses provide opportunities to network with students and teachers from different cultures.

Co-operation with other parties

During the studies, the students will complete practice periods in various physiotherapy environments either in Finland or abroad. The student can complete studies at the Laurea University of Applied Sciences and the HAMK University of Applied Sciences (the FUAS Federation of Universities of Applied Sciences). The student will complete studies in, for example, projects and authentic customer situations in cooperation with workplaces.

Research focus

Your studies will incorporate workplace development tasks in cooperation with businesses and workplace organisations. Multidisciplinary workplace-oriented projects and a range of learning environments (student cooperatives, LimuRadio, SimulTi, Fumatec, Linkku, etc.) help you build strong contacts with employer organisations throughout your studies.

Career opportunities

After graduation, you will be able to work in the public, private or third sector or as an entrepreneur. Your workplace may be in a variety of hospitals and health care centres, research and treatment facilities, rehabilitation facilities and spas, occupational health service, public health, sports and disability-related organisations, social services, services for the elderly, daycare centres, municipal education and sports services, recreational services, projects, research and development projects as well as in the well-being sector.

The physiotherapist programme offers good postgraduate study opportunities. After three years of work experience, you will be able to apply to a University of Applied Sciences Master's degree programme.
