Process and Materials Engineering 15S (for students who started studies autumn 2015)

There is a demand for materials technology engineers in every industrial field. In the degree programme in materials technology in Lahti the student can acquire qualifications and specialise in wood products technology or polymer and fibre technology.

The studies provide a comprehensive education in production and material science, containing all the main materials belonging to the specialisation. High tech expertise and sustainable development are essential parts of further processing of the materials. There are various forms of
cooperation with company partners, for example cooperation projects, research projects and work placements in Finland and abroad.

Polymer and fibre technology (for students who started their studies in autumn 2015)

Polymer-based materials can originate directly from nature from renewable raw material sources, or they can be manufactured
synthetically. Some of them are known as plastics, some as textile and fibre materials. Polymer-based materials are part of our
everyday life and they are irreplaceable for many applications. They have a decisive influence when moving towards a more energy and
material efficient and environmentally friendly future. Polymer materials have a great positive role in all aspects of sustainable
development.
Today polymer materials can be found everywhere. This is due to several factors, such as the reduction of the consumption of fossil
fuels, making maximum use of renewable energy, transportation of clean water, the need to guarantee the hygiene of foodstuffs,
applications in extreme conditions, smart materials and modern innovations in medicine. Compared to many other materials, polymermaterials are light, energy efficient and easily modifiable to almost any end use. Polymer-based materials can be recycled and reused
several times, so they can even be utilised as waste.
Central study themes in polymer and fibre technology are:
- polymer-based materials, fibres and composites as materials
- product design
- tool and manufacturing technology
- potentials of 3D printing
- testing and quality of materials and products
- smart materials and products
- working in projects together with companies and students from other degree programmes
- sustainable development and ecology, recycling
A few years ago, there was a reform of degree programmes in Lahti University of Applied Sciences, where the degree programmes of
wood technology, plastics engineering and textile and clothing technology were merged into a new degree programme of materials and
production engineering. Each of the previous degree programmes became specialization options. Another change took place in autumn
2014: plastics engineering was combined with textile and clothing technology under a new name, polymer and fibre technology. The
change had a smaller effect on plastics studies than on textile and clothing studies. Clothing is no longer included in the studies, but the
focus is on different kinds of fibres, their properties, testing and applications. The studies of plastics engineering have been developed
to take better account of the new requirements in the field.
The specialisation in polymer and fibre technology provides versatile qualifications in material science, design, manufacture and
applications, taking into account the principles of sustainable development. The studies of product design use tools such as 3D printing.
There is cooperation with industry in the form of various projects, work placements and theses. Study methods are flexible. Part of the
studies can for example be carried out in a company by learning on the job, in the form of supervised work placement or in some largescale
project. Flexible study paths can be created for the students, if needed. Internationality is and will be important for Finland and
Finnish business. The students can develop their international competence through exchange studies or work placement abroad, which
will also improve the students’ chances of getting subsequent work placements and jobs. The students have been active in participating
in international student exchange and they are encouraged to do so in the future.
Graduates from the specialization of polymer and fibre technology can find employment in different sections of plastics and polymer
industry as well as industry utilizing polymer-based materials and products, in Finland and abroad. Possible tasks are expert, sales,
marketing and design tasks, work in management and superior positions, research and product development tasks, teaching and
working as an entrepreneur.
