Master of Business Administration
This Lahti UAS Master's programme equips students for demanding management, expert and development roles in business and the public sector.
The programme provides in-depth knowledge and helps students develop an investigative and developmental approach to their practice. It also offers a good basis for personal life and career management.
The Master of Business Administration programme comprises common studies which are advanced professional studies, and complementary courses which are elective studies chosen by each student. Advanced professional studies are designed to build on students' skills and knowledge in different areas of modern business management: strategic business management, competency-based HR management, innovation management, process and project management, and network/customer relationship management. In addition, students will learn to master various practical development tools.
The thesis is a core component of the studies and it is implemented in the form of a research-based development project.
The aim of the thesis is to develop and demonstrate the students’ ability to apply research data, to use selected methods for analysing and solving workplace problems and to carry out demanding specialist tasks independently. The thesis prepares students to design and implement a research-based workplace development project whose outputs and findings can be applied in real-life workplaces.
The Master of Business Administration degree comprises advanced professional studies and the thesis, which together form the competence base of the degree. Students supplement the core competence through a selection of subject-specific modules and courses which steer and formulate their occupational profiles and support the development thesis project.
Online learning platforms are utilised extensively in the programme to facilitate flexible study alongside work. There are 1-2 contact sessions per month. Each contact session is usually organised over consecutive Thursday and Friday afternoons. Depending on the choice of supplementary courses, contact sessions may also take place on other weekday evenings and on weekends. Contact sessions include expert lectures and individual/group assignments. In distance learning, various social media tools are also used to guide and support independent learning.

In UAS Master's degree programmes, the thesis is a research-based development project which is usually linked to the student's own work and workplace. The thesis process starts from identifying a problem together with the workplace organisation which the thesis project can focus on resolving or determining development objectives for a specific area of the business. With the thesis, the student demonstrates professional competence as well as the ability to apply various development and research methods and the use of scientific literature. Throughout the process, students will be able to evaluate their own activities and those of the home organisation and development in these areas. Alternatively, students can produce the thesis as part of a Lahti UAS project.
The degree title is Tradenomi (ylempi AMK) / Master of Business Administration. The degree corresponds to the same EQF (European Qualifications Framework) level as other Finnish second cycle degrees (e.g. university Master's degrees) and leads to the same eligibility for certain public sector positions and other roles.
