Study objectives

Aim of the study is to get a wider perspective and knowledge base in urban environments and the challenges concerning climate change and its environmental impacts. Students are expected to know, manage and develop interdisciplinary approach to urban planning and management tasks.

Study contents

The main issues in professional studies are urban and interactive planning, climate change and its environmental impacts, environmental management and GIS in environmental planning. Elective studies consist of environmental technology and research and societal change and future foresight methods. Students can choose elective studies also from other LUAS Master programmes or FUAS Master programmes (in Laurea UAS and HAMK UAS). Research subjects cover urban and environmental issues in large scale. Research is working life orientated and aims to adapt results of environmental research in practical situations and development. The methods used are chosen according to the aim.

Structure of studies

Professional studies consist of 20 cr, elective studies 10 cr and thesis 30 cr.

Thesis

Thesis project can deal with challenging urban and environmental issues considering the climate change mitigation and adaptation viewpoints. It can introduce national and/or international cases and practices. Main emphasis is the working life relevance of the thesis project. Thesis project requires independent working, use of suitable methods to provide knowledge base of the thesis, good competencies to use references critically and abilities to make conclusions on the basis of the results.

Qualification

Student can plan, manage and evaluate individually a challenging developing project dealing with urban environmental issues. Student is able to use interactive methods in project management.

Internationalization

Student can plan, manage and evaluate individually a challenging developing project dealing with urban environmental issues. Student is able to use interactive methods in project management.

Co-operation with other parties

The programme works in cooperation with public and private stakeholders in Finland. Part of the organisations are international companies

Research focus

The programme has own project RESCUE, an Erasmus Life-long Learning programme, the aim of which is to develop interdisciplinary environmental Master studies combining science, planning and management in urban environments under the impacts of climate change.

Career opportunities

The studies provide wider working opportunities in public sector and private enterprises depending on the combination of the student´s Bachelor's degree, working experience and Master´s thesis. Master´s studies provide opportunities for environmentally orientated career.

Postrgraduate study opportunities

Postgraduate study opportunities are available on national or international level but students are urged to find out special requirements posed to Master students graduated from universities of applied sciences.
