Bachelor of Culture and Arts
Students in this programme specialise in interior architecture or furniture design. Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be qualified for various roles in design and architect agencies or as an independent interior architect or furniture designer.
The programme concentrates on the design and planning of living environments and public spaces such as workplace, commercial and recreational facilities, associated products and services, and research in this field. Key approaches include visual quality, user-centred design and sustainable development.
As a student in this programme, you will explore user-centred design and architecture and work on design tasks to develop solutions for users' individual, social and cultural needs and preferences. You will learn to incorporate the requirements and challenges of a changing social and cultural environment in your designs.
Students in this programme explore the built environment and its evolving needs from the sustainability perspective. You will learn to develop new solutions that respond to people's spatial needs in an environmentally sustainable way.
The degree programme carries 240 ECTS points and consists of core competence and subject-specific complementary competence. Core competence consists of Lahti UAS common core studies (25 ECTS), programme-specific professional studies (110 ECTS), a work placement period (30 ECTS) and a thesis project (15 ECTS). These studies provide the knowledge and skills base and expertise required for the degree. Complementary competence studies (60 ECTS) consist of elective path studies, other professional studies, projects and industry collaboration projects that enable you to expand and focus your expertise according to your personal career interests.
The programme is taught in Finnish. Some of the courses will be delivered in English, and some English-language learning materials are also used.
The UAS Bachelor's degree includes a thesis project which carries 15 ECTS credits. The thesis project is an opportunity to expand and develop your expertise and ability to perform development assignments in your chosen field. You will develop your information gathering and problem-solving skills and ability to perceive wholes. The thesis project is usually an assignment carried out for a real-world organisation and thus it offers genuine opportunities for interaction with the industry. The thesis project includes a written report, and it can be completed individually or in pairs or groups.
We offer our students diverse opportunities to gain international experience. You will be able to complete part of your studies at our partner institutions around the world and take work placement periods in other countries. Our language course offering is designed to help you develop extensive and diverse language skills. English-language courses provide opportunities to network with students and teachers from different cultures.
Industry collaboration is an integral part of the programme. Students work on projects, development assignments and commmissions received from businesses and public organisations. These will give you valuable workplace skills and industry contacts. Lahti UAS Institute of Design alumni are important partners in our activities, educational offering and projects. We are active members of national and international higher education networks.
The R&D focus areas are based on the strategic competence areas of Lahti UAS: Design, Smart Industry, Welfare and Reformative Growth, and Clean and Dynamic Environment. Multidisciplinary workplace-oriented projects, RDI projects and a range of learning environments (student cooperatives, LimuRadio, SimulTi, Fumatec, Linkku, etc.) help you build strong contacts with employer organisations.
The strong industry focus of the programme translates into excellent employment opportunities. Students often find entry-level employment through contacts built during the programme.
The degree qualifies students to apply to various Master's programmes at universities and Master-level visual communication programmes at universities of applied sciences in Finland and abroad. Many previous graduates have continued studies at the Institute of Design or in programmes offered by Aalto University, the University of Lapland and various overseas universities.
