Study objectives

As a nurse, you will be able to promote and support the health and well-being of people of different ages, families, and communities, and give personalised and comprehensive care to patients. As a nursing expert, you will be able to perform and develop nursing practice with a proactive and responsible approach in cooperation with other social and health care professionals. As a nurse, you will also be able to make independent decisions, lead teams and perform supervisory duties.

Study contents

The degree programme emphasises future skills and competences, in which smart self-care solutions are used to promote the health and well-being of customers and families, their lifestyle changes, monitoring and treatment of chronic illnesses, and rehabilitation. Smart self-care solutions refer, for example, to various electronic services in health care as well as the possibilities created by robotics for customers.

During the studies, you will be completing a variety of working life development tasks to test new customer- or patient-oriented services and promote well-being with an entrepreneurial approach. The studies take primarily place in real workplace environments versatile and adaptable simulation facilities and classrooms will also be used.

One of the strengths of the degree programme in nursing at the Lahti University of Applied Sciences is solid simulation competence. The simulation centre makes it possible to create exercises and learning situations for social and health care students, which have an authentic feel. The simulation environment provides a safe setting for practising a variety of care situations encountered in social and health care using with a patient simulator or actors posing as patients, among others. Simulation motivates and activates the learners and, from the teaching perspective, the emphasis is on a student-centred and guidance-based approach.

The simulation centre is one of the learning environments and practice platforms, where students have the opportunity to test their competence and review the topics already learned. The stimulation facility can be used to create goal-oriented learning situations and to practice the operating methods required by utilising evidence-based information. Teaching by simulation provides insightful learning experiences in an authentic setting.

You will gain multicultural workplace skills by completing part of your studies together with an international, English-language student group and by participating in international student exchange either in Finland or abroad.

Structure of studies

The Bachelor of Health Care (Nursing) degree consists of 210 ECTS credits. The degree programme consists of the shared core competence at the Lahti University of Applied Sciences (25 ECTS), professional core competence (155 ECTS) as well as complementary competence (30 ECTS).

Professional core competence (155 ECTS) includes professional studies (45 ECTS), shared studies in social and health care (20 ECTS), practice (75 ECTS) and a thesis (15 ECTS). The curriculum is made up of modules worth 10–15 ECTS credits each, and each module is divided into courses, which are worth 5–10 ECTS credits each. The studies include a minimum of 15 credits of studies in English.

More about the language of instruction

The programme language is Finnish. Some of the courses will be delivered in English, and some English-language learning materials will also be used.

Thesis

The UAS Bachelor's degree includes a thesis project which carries 15 ECTS. The thesis will expand and deepen your professional competence and provide diverse skills to work in sector development tasks. The thesis will improve your information gathering and problem solving skills as well as sense-making. It also enables genuine interaction with working life, since the thesis is primarily drawn up as a working life assignment. The thesis can be completed as an individual, pair or group work and it includes a written report.

Qualification

Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be qualified to work as a registered nurse. A graduate with the Bachelor of Health Care (Nursing) degree will be entitled to use the degree title Sairaanhoitaja (AMK)/Registered Nurse. The programme leads to a nursing qualification that meets the requirements of EU directives, which also offers interesting career opportunities abroad. A Registered Nurse is a regulated profession overseen by Valvira, the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health.

Internationalization

You will be able to complete part of your studies at our partner institutions around the world and complete practice periods in other countries. Our language course offering is designed to help you develop extensive and diverse language skills. English-language courses provide opportunities to network with students and teachers from different cultures.

Co-operation with other parties

During your studies, you will be able to familiarise yourself with the world of work during numerous clinical placements in various social and health care environments in Finland and abroad. You will have the opportunity to work in various real-world projects and network with the region's employers. The multidisciplinary learning environments of Lahti UAS also provide ample opportunities for student entrepreneurship. In addition, thanks to our partnership with Laurea and HAMK Universities of Applied Sciences, we can offer an extensive range of summer courses.

Research focus

Your studies will incorporate workplace development tasks in cooperation with businesses and workplace organisations. Multidisciplinary workplace-oriented projects and a range of learning environments (student cooperatives, LimuRadio, SimulTi, Fumatec, Linkku, etc.) help you build strong contacts with employer organisations throughout your studies.

Career opportunities

Nurses work in cooperation with other experts involved in the customer’s/patient's care and participate in multidisciplinary teams as experts of their fields. They can work in social and health care services in the public, private or third sector, in health care centres, hospitals and well-being centres, in various assisted living facilities, associations, disabled people's organisations and foundations, and as self-employed entrepreneurs. Various national and international expert roles are also available. As a nurse, you have a choice of extensive and diverse career opportunities.

Postrgraduate study opportunities

The Bachelor of Health Care (Nursing) qualification offers good postgraduate study opportunities. After three years of work experience, you will be able to apply to a University of Applied Sciences Master's degree programme.
