Study objectives

The Degree Programme in Information and Communications Technology emphasises “Mobile technologies and services”. The selected emphasis is manifested in both the programme content and the projects completed with employers and businesses (companies, municipalities and cities, institutes of higher education).

The programme provides you with methods, techniques, software and procedures for designing mobile technology and gamified digital services as well as back office systems required by the services for the customers. Workplace-oriented projects deepen your learning, carried out together with the commissioning organisation.

If you specialise in media technology, your Bachelor of Engineering degree will enable you to develop games by using 2D and 3D game engines and also utilise modelling and animation techniques. You will know how to produce digital images, video footage, 3D models and multimedia for a variety of purposes. You will know how to utilise the aforementioned contents in the web environment.

If you specialise in software engineering, your Bachelor of Engineering degree will enable you to design and develop software for a variety of device platforms. You will know how to utilise decentralisation and cloud services in an agile manner and to work as a member of a development team, for example, in an organisation producing web, mobile or IoT services. You will also be well versed in taking gamification into consideration in usability.

If you specialise in data networks, your Bachelor of Engineering degree will enable you to design and develop data network solutions which meet the project requirements. You will know how to utilise cloud services and implement virtualisation solutions.

Study contents

All students in the Degree Programme in Information and Communications Technology study the same subjects for 1.5 years. During that time, you will learn web technologies, data network design and development, and media systems. You will also study mathematics and physics as well as foreign languages and communication. After the initial studies, you can choose whether you want to specialise in media technology, software engineering, or data networks.

The contents of the media technology specialisation are close to the gaming sector and also provide basic skills for positions in this field. In media technology, you will learn to create virtual models of products and environments, simulate hardware, and produce digital marketing, user instruction and product information materials for data networks.

In software engineering, you will focus on decentralised, web-based services. The increase in smart devices has expanded web-based services to various device platforms. At the same time, the spectrum of various sensors generates new types of applications and services and sets new requirements on the design, development and scalability of back office systems.

Data networks are part of our daily lives, and their proper functioning already plays a critical role and will continue to do so in the future. In the data networks specialisation, you will learn to develop and maintain companies’ data networks, IoT solutions, virtualised systems and various cloud services.

The programme includes annual projects, which are assigned by external parties. At the same time, you will participate in active cooperation with companies and public institutions (e.g. municipalities, cities, universities and research institutions). These assignments help students obtain an understanding of the workplace skills that are required of a Bachelor of Engineering. This will also provides students with good opportunities to establish contacts with local companies.

Work placement and a thesis are essential elements of the programme. During work placement periods, students work in companies or public institutions in tasks matching their education.

Structure of studies

Structure of studies, 240 ECTS

The curriculum of the Bachelor of Engineering programme at the Lahti University of Applied Sciences consists of core competence (180 ECTS credits) and complementary competence (60 ECTS credits). The core competence consists of the core competence shared by all Lahti University of Applied Sciences students (25 ECTS credits), professional core competence (110 ECTS credits) as well as practice (30 ECTS credits) and thesis (15 ECTS credits). Complementary competence can consist of engineering courses, multidisciplinary path studies or other competence supporting one’s professional growth. The curriculum is based on modules of 10–25 ECTS credits each. The modules are divided into courses of 3–5 ECTS credits each.

Choosing a main subject or field of specialization

Within the programme, you can specialise in media technology, software engineering, or data networks. You make the selection in the second year of study and draw up a personal study plan with your tutor.

More about the language of instruction

The main language is Finnish but you can also take examinations or complete the assignments or the thesis in English, for example. Professional subjects are studied partly in English.

Thesis

The UAS Bachelor's degree includes an independent thesis project which carries 15 ECTS. The thesis will expand and deepen your professional competence and provide diverse skills to work in sector development tasks. The thesis will improve your information gathering and problem solving skills as well as sense-making. It also enables genuine interaction with working life, since the thesis is primarily drawn up as a working life assignment. The thesis can be completed individually or as pair or group work and it includes a written report. At best, the thesis will be your stepping stone into working life.

Qualification

Graduates earn a Bachelor of Engineering degree, which equals the university degree of Bachelor of Science in information and communications technology. The programme duration is four years.

You will be able to complete part of your studies at our partner institutions around the world and complete practice periods in other countries. Our language course offering is designed to help you develop extensive and diverse language skills. English-language courses provide opportunities to network with students and teachers from different cultures.

Co-operation with other parties

The programme includes active cooperation with companies and public institutions (e.g. municipalities, cities, universities and research institutions). These assignments, in particular, help students obtain an understanding of the workplace skills that are required of a Bachelor of Engineering.

Research focus

Your studies will incorporate workplace development tasks in cooperation with businesses and workplace organisations. Multidisciplinary workplace-oriented projects and a range of learning environments (student cooperatives, LimuRadio, SimulTi, Fumatec, Linkku, etc.) help you build strong contacts with employer organisations throughout your studies.

The research and development work focuses on continuous improvement of the user experience. The media technology competence provides tools for creating a visual and graphical image, and the software engineering competence enables you to create web-based services, which can be used on a variety of terminal devices regardless of time and location. The data network competence enables you to work on energy-efficient cloud services and virtualisation.

Career opportunities

For the graduating engineer, the programme offers diverse skills for working in technical and commercial tasks in the ICT sector. Typical initial positions available for a graduate include a web designer, telecommunications designer or content creator in both industry and the public sector. After that, the career path can include management and supervisory positions in project management, as a software architect, information security manager or a leader of a game team. The programme also equips you to run your own business, and some student establish their own companies even before graduating.

Postrgraduate study opportunities

An UAS Bachelor of Engineering can pursue Master’s level studies in engineering at a university or a university of applied sciences after complementary studies (e.g. in mathematics). An UAS Bachelor of Engineering in information and communications technology can also pursue studies leading to a Master’s degree at a university of applied sciences after accumulating three years of professional experience in the field in question. The scope of the Master’s degree (Digital technologies) is 60 ECTS.
