Study objectives

The Programme in Energy and Environmental Engineering in the Lahti University of Applied Sciences emphasises “circular economy solutions and sustainable urban environment”. The selected emphasis is manifested in both the programme content and the projects completed with employers and businesses (companies, municipalities and cities, institutes of higher education).

The programme provides you with methods, techniques, software and procedures for designing energy- and material-efficient (resource-efficient) solutions for customers. Workplace-oriented projects deepen your learning, carried out together with the commissioning organisation.

If you specialise in urban planning, your Bachelor of Engineering degree will enable you to develop the built environment, master the levels of plans and the required design software and basic investments as well as the interactive design process. You will also know how to improve the energy efficiency of the urban structure by applying your expertise.

If you specialise in environmental engineering, your Bachelor of Engineering degree will enable you to develop energy- and material-efficient techniques and operating methods. You will know how to assess the condition of the environment and choose the methods and techniques for a restoration plan. In developing circular economy solutions, you will be able to bring your environmental engineering expertise to a multidisciplinary team.

Study contents

All students in the Degree Programme in Energy and Environmental Engineering study the same subjects for 1.5 years. During that time, you will learn about, among others, the water and urban ecosystems, impacts of climate change, waste management, water and energy supply, environmental and urban planning as well as environmental legislation. You will also study natural sciences in a phenomenon-based manner, as well as foreign languages, communication and digital skills. After the initial studies, you can choose whether you specialise in urban planning or environmental technology.

In urban planning, you will focus on environmentally friendly and energy-efficient development of living environments, urban structures and traffic routes using CAD-based design programs. In addition to designing planning and infrastructure networks, controlled management of drainage waters also plays an important role in city planning.

In environmental technology, you will deepen your competence in resource technology by, for example, examining the possibilities to reuse industrial side streams (waste). The theme of energy efficiency will become familiar to you in a project focusing on renewable and decentralised energy, for example. Important skills in terms of finding employment also include collecting environmental samples, managing the restoration process of contaminated soil and the water environment, as well as reviews to improve the environmental efficiency of processes and operations.

The workplace-based projects completed in the programme will help you deepen your competence in the topic at hand and also provide you with project management, reporting and teamwork skills and competence in research methods and information searches. Work placement will enable you to familiarise yourself with the operations of a company or a public institution as well as to gain practical experience. The thesis provides you with an opportunity to focus on an interesting, workplace-oriented topic using a research-based approach.

The circular economy path studies enable you to concentrate on themes related to the circular economy in multidisciplinary teams (which include design and business administration students, among others): energy- and resource-efficiency, sustainable management of operations, product design and utilisation of side streams. Assignments may originate from companies, and the path studies include entrepreneurial courses that will help you develop your own idea.

You can complement your competence by choosing courses in the energy and environmental engineering course offering and also by tapping into technology courses and other offering at the Lahti UAS.

Structure of studies

Structure of studies, 240 ECTS

The curriculum of the Bachelor of Engineering programme at the Lahti University of Applied Sciences consists of core competence (180 ECTS) and complementary competence (60 ECTS). The core competence consists of the core competence shared by all Lahti University of Applied Sciences students (25 ECTS), professional core competence (110 ECTS) as well as practice (30 ECTS) and thesis (15 ECTS). The complementary competence can consist of engineering courses, multidisciplinary path studies or other competence supporting one’s professional growth. The curriculum is based on modules of 10–25 ECTS each. The modules are divided into courses of 3–5 ECTS each.

Choosing a main subject or field of specialization

Within the programme, you can specialise in urban planning or environmental engineering. You make the selection in the second year of study and draw up a personal study plan with your tutor.

More about the language of instruction

The degree programme language is Finnish. Some of the courses are delivered in English, and you can take examinations or complete an assignment or the thesis in English, if so agreed.

Thesis

The UAS Bachelor's degree includes an independent thesis project which carries 15 ECTS. The thesis will expand and deepen your professional competence and provide diverse skills to work in sector development tasks. The thesis will improve your information gathering and problem solving skills as well as sense-making. It also enables genuine interaction with working life, since the thesis is primarily drawn up as a working life assignment. The thesis can be completed as an individual, pair or group work and it includes a written report. At best, the thesis will be your stepping stone into working life.

Internationalization

We offer our students diverse opportunities to gain international competence for working life. You will be able to complete part of your studies at our partner institutions around the world and complete practice periods in other countries. Our language course offering is designed to help you develop extensive and diverse language skills. English-language courses provide opportunities to network with students and teachers from different cultures.

Co-operation with other parties

The programme includes active cooperation with other sectors, companies and public institutions (e.g. municipalities, cities, universities and research institutions). The assignments integrated in the programme will provide you with an understanding of what workplace skills are required in the environmental sector.

Research focus

Your studies will incorporate workplace development tasks in cooperation with businesses and workplace organisations. Multidisciplinary workplace-oriented projects and a range of learning environments (student cooperatives, LimuRadio, SimulTi, Fumatec, Linkku, etc.) help you build strong contacts with employer organisations throughout your studies.

The LAMK Green learning environment makes it possible to complete practice, project work and thesis in Lahti UAS’s projects on Circular economy and development of sustainable urban environments. You will be part of a project team, in which you will learn project and teamwork and gain experience in organising an international event, carry out company-oriented research, etc.

Career opportunities

As an urban planning engineer, you will work as a designer in projects, in consulting companies or for cities or municipalities. The career path may lead to tasks in which you are responsible for and manage projects. As an environmental engineering professional, you can work in a variety of consulting positions, as a designer, or an environmental coordinator or manager. You may also be employed as a circular economy expert in a company or in the public sector. Becoming an entrepreneur is also an option.

Postrgraduate study opportunities

An UAS Bachelor of Engineering can pursue Master’s level studies in engineering at a university or a university of applied sciences after potential complementary studies (e.g. in mathematics). An UAS Bachelor of Engineering in environmental engineering can pursue studies leading to a Finnish or English-language Master’s degree at a university of applied sciences after accumulating three years of professional experience in the field in question.

The scope of the Master’s programmes in engineering provided by the Lahti University of Applied Sciences (Sustainable Urban Environment and Urban Sustainability) is 60 ECTS. They focus on multidisciplinary development of urban environments and adjusting to climate change.
